Wi-Fi vs Internet: What is the Difference
Is Wi-Fi the same as the Internet? The short answer is no.
People often use Wi-Fi and the Internet interchangeably, but they’re not the same. This article explains how they work together and what to check if your device says it’s connected but nothing loads.
What is the Internet?
The Internet is a massive global communications network. In fact, as its name suggests, it’s more than one network; it’s thousands of interconnected networks. Think of the Internet as the main highway system that connects cities, stores, and homes.
When you sign up for home Internet, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) delivers this Internet signal to your home through various delivery methods—such as high-speed fibre-optic cables, copper cables, or fixed wireless signals. Inside your home, that line connection feeds into a router. The router acts as the gateway to the Internet through one of those various connection methods.
What is Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is a short-range wireless technology that uses radio waves to connect your devices within your home to the local router. Think of it as the driveway onto the main highway.
Wi-Fi isn’t the Internet itself. It’s how your devices reach the router, which connects you to the Internet.
How to connect your devices
There are two ways to access your Internet connection in your home.
Wi-Fi: This is the most common option. In your device's network settings, select your network name and enter your password.
Ethernet cable: By plugging your device directly into the router, you can get a more stable connection, which may be the better option if you’re gaming online, streaming content, or working from home.
Is being connected to Wi-Fi the same as being connected to the Internet?
Not technically. You can be connected to your Wi-Fi network and still not be able to load a website or send an email. When that happens, it usually means your router isn't properly connected to the Internet.
If you are connected to the Wi-Fi but nothing is loading, try these steps:
- Unplug your router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug in the router and wait another minute or two.
