Experiencing buffering, lag, or slow downloads doesn't always mean there's an issue with your internet service. Several factors can affect your online experience; from the speed package you've chosen to the devices and equipment you're using. Understanding these factors can help you get the most out of your connection and enjoy a smoother online experience. 

Getting fast, reliable internet throughout our homes has never been more important. Today's households rely on internet connections for everything from streaming movies and TV shows to online gaming, video calls, smart home devices, cloud storage, and remote work. 

With more connected devices than ever before, it's easy to assume your internet service is to blame when things start to slow down. But before contacting your service provider's Help Desk, there are a few factors worth considering. Here are four common reasons your internet experience may not be performing as expected. 

Factor #1: Internet Service Speed 

"How much speed do I need?" This is where it begins and is always the first question we have to answer.  

Different online activities require different amounts of bandwidth. Browsing websites and checking email use relatively little bandwidth, while streaming 4K video, participating in video calls, and online gaming require significantly more. 

Streaming services continue to improve video quality, which means internet demands continue to grow. Netflix currently recommends:

While these recommendations are suitable for a single stream, most households have multiple devices online at the same time. If one person is streaming a movie while another is gaming and someone else is on a video call, your household's internet needs can add up quickly. 

That's why it's important to choose an internet package that reflects how your household actually uses the internet today. 

So, before you call your service provider Help Desk to seek guidance about a problem with your internet service, make sure you've purchased a fast enough package to meet your streaming services needs and when using multiple connected devices simultaneously. The next factors could contribute if you have and are still experiencing that lag in your connection. 

Factor #2: Your Device 

Your internet experience is only as fast as the device you're using. Older smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smart TVs may not support the latest Wi-Fi standards, limiting the speeds they can achieve even when connected to a high-speed internet package. 

If your device is several years old, it may support older Wi-Fi technologies and can’t take full advantage of modern internet speeds. Keeping devices updated and ensuring they support current Wi-Fi standards can help improve overall performance.

Today's households are more connected than ever. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, gaming consoles, smart speakers, security cameras, doorbells, thermostats, and other connected devices all share the same internet connection. 

The more devices using the internet at the same time, the more bandwidth your household requires. 

For example, if one person is streaming a movie in 4K, another is gaming online, someone is attending a video meeting, and multiple smart home devices are active in the background, your network can become congested if there isn't enough available bandwidth. 

When choosing an internet package or evaluating your home network, it's important to consider not only how many people are using the internet, but also how many connected devices your household has overall.
